Addington Drain forms part of Christchurch’s storm water network (defined by the red line boundary in the map below). This network is owned and operated by the Christchurch City Council. It takes rainwater (storm water) from sealed surfaces, such as roof water, roads and yards, before discharging it to ground or surface water.

The majority of storm water in Christchurch ends up untreated in the Avon and Heathcote rivers. The majority of storm water in Addington Drain is channelled through storm water pipes and road gutters before becoming an above ground stream as it passes through Hagley Park. It then discharges untreated into the Avon River.
Water quality studies undertaken by the Christchurch City Council (CCC) between 1992 and 2006 identify Addington Drain as a significant source of pollution for the Avon River. Water quality monitoring by CCC has restarted in 2008 to include a wider range of contaminants.
Environment Canterbury’s pollution prevention team will be working proactively with all businesses in the catchment to reduce the potential for pollution to enter the Avon River.
So, what do you need to do if you are a business in the Addington Drain catchment?
In short, nothing, until you have heard from us. A Pollution Prevention Officer (PPO) will contact you to organise a time to visit your site. Alternatively, you can contact us on the details below to organise a time that suits you.
During the site visit, the PPO will discuss pollution prevention measures with you. This will involve a site walkover so that we can help you identify your environmental risks. Your PPO will supply you with resources to help you to reduce these risks. These resources and PPO time is free, there is no direct cost to you.
We will visit all businesses within the Addington catchment over a four month period. We aim to use your knowledge of your business, and our familiarity with environmental management issues to improve the water quality in your catchment. We want to provide an outcome that is positive for your business and the environment.
