Activities and actions
The Ashburton Zone Committee has had briefings from technical experts, a number of field trips around the district and meetings with a wide range of stakeholders to gauge the range of views on water management issues.
In late July the zone committee also facilitated three public workshops to get feedback on key priorities and desired outcomes for water management in the region. More than 100 people attended the meetings held in Hinds, Ashburton and Methven.
Some of the common themes raised by community members included water storage options, how to get more water and what further work needs to be done to get a clear picture of water quality in the zone.
The feedback from these meetings has helped the zone committee develop its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP). The ZIP outlines the actions, responsibilities and timeframes for activities to achieve the principles, targets, and goals set out in the CWMS.
Community members were invited to provide feedback on the draft ZIP and a series of public meetings were held.
The zone committee presented its final ZIP to councils in late November and December. The ZIP has been endorsed as "the basis for the design and realignment of work programmes, for drafting regional plan provisions and for preparation of a draft Long Term Plan”.
In February the committee discussed the implementation of its ZIP with Ashburton District, and Canterbury Regional council staff.

At its monthly meeting in April the committee received a presentation on the Water Use Report, which highlights the need for consent holders to install water measuring systems.
The committee also received an update on the Ashburton River Plan and a report on the Managed Aquifer recharge trial in the Hinds catchment.
In March the committee considered a report on the Ashburton Zone Water Supply and Demand prepared by BECA for Environment Canterbury.
