Activities and actions

Since its formation in April 2011, the Orari-Opihi-Pareora Zone Committee has had numerous meetings to bring members up to speed on water issues in the region.

The committee has also been on a number of field trips to visit sites of interest and engage with community members.

The key focus for the committee has been to work with the community to develop a programme of recommendations for water management in the zone to address the goals and targets set out in the CWMS.

At its first meeting for 2012 the committee finalised its draft Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) for water management following a series of community feedback meetings.

The community had a chance to provide feedback on the draft ZIP via a series of public meetings in February. Feedback could also be submitted on-line prior to 9 March 2012.

Once the feedback was collated and considered, the ZIP was finalised at the committee's meeting on 2 April. It has now been endorsed by councils as the basis for the design and realignment of council work and planning programmes for freshwater.

At its May meeting the zone committee focussed on its work programme to implement the ZIP. It also received a number of briefings on local and regional water management issues including; the Pareora River Flow Plan, Orari flood plain strategy, Waitaki River Plan, and the progress of the draft Land and Water Regional Plan by Environment Canterbury.
