River Report phone instructions

The River Report phone infoline provides information in four categories:
on flooding, river flows and rainfall, irrigation restrictions and the level of Lake Ellesmere.

How "fresh" is the info?
Rainfall and river level information is updated twice daily and more frequently during floods.  Information on irrigation restrictions is available during the irrigation season.

Is there a cost?
The River Report is not a toll service, however a nominal charge of 12 cents per minute is charged to the caller (this goes to the telecommunications company, not Environment Canterbury.



What do I do?

You need a touch tone phone to access the River Report on 083 225 522.

Press 1 for flood information

Flood information is provided when river levels are high.  Flood predictions are given as well as the existing flood situation.

Then press

  • 1 for Kaikoura
  • 2 for Waiau River to Rakaia River
  • 3 for Ashburton River to Rangitata River
  • 4 for Orari River to Waihao River
  • 5 for Waitaki Valley Rivers

Press 2 for river and rainfall information

River flow and rainfall information is updated twice daily and more frequently during flood events.

Then press

  • 1 for Ashley River and rivers north
  • 2 for Waimakariri River to Rakaia River
  • 3 for Ashburton River and Rangitata River
  • 4 for the foothill rivers of South Canterbury
  • 5 for Waitaki Valley Rivers

Press 3 or 4 for low flow information for Irrigation Restrictions

Low flow information is available in the irrigation season and includes restrictions.

Press 3 for the area south of the Rakaia River to the Waitaki River

Then choose from the following areas:

Press:

  • 1 for south of Rakaia River to Rangitata
  • 2 for south of Rangitata to Opihi River
  • 3 for south of Opihi to Waitaki

Press 4 for the area from the Clarence River to the Rakaia River

Then choose from the following areas :
Press:

  • 1 for Clarence River south to Conway River
  • 2 for south of Conway River to Hurunui River
  • 3 for south of Hurunui River to Ashley River
  • 4 for south of Ashley River to Waimakariri River
  • 5 for south of Waimakariri River to Halswell River (including Banks Peninsula)
  • 6 for south of Halswell River to Rakaia River

Press 6 for information on the level of Lake Ellesmere

Lake Ellesmere information is updated weekly.
