Air Quality in Canterbury

Air

Christchurch Smog Video

Years of testing In Christchurch has shown that 90% of the suspended particulate pollution in winter is produced by domestic solid fuel burning (wood and coal fires).  Motor vehicles produce around 3% and industrial burning the remaining 7%.

This silent, 25-second video Avi File (it's a big file - 3.5 MB) clearly shows Christchurch's major winter air quality issue: solid fuel heating.
Video footage was taken from a point above the "smog zone" on the Port Hills.

Take Home Message:

Smoke from wood fires pollutes the air.  It cause thousands of people in Christchurch to get sick every year and even results in people dying.  To reduce smoke, insulate your house properly, get rid of open fires and install electricity or flued gas heating.

Smog won't go away, without you doing something.  We should all have the right to breath the benefits of cleaner air during winter.
