Transport is one of the biggest users of energy in Canterbury. The biennial regional energy survey data serve to illustrate the overall trend of increasing regional energy use, and dependence on oil products for transportation.

The key trends show transport energy use is fast growing (4.0% per annum) and accounts for 60% of the region’s energy consumption.

Environment Canterbury provides bus services in the greater Christchurch area, Timaru and Temuka.

Environment Canterbury also prepares the Canterbury Regional Land Transport Strategy. The RLTS undergoes its triennial review in 2008.
