Gravel Consultation

The Regional Gravel Management Report (RGMR) addresses issues relating to the future management of gravel extraction from Canterbury’s rivers. Environment Canterbury has undertaken investigations to assess the demand for gravel in Canterbury and to establish an estimate of annual sustainable supply (annual replenishment) of gravel in Canterbury rivers. This shows that sustainable supplies can not meet demand in the long term.

The RGMR provides background information about gravel resources and issues relating to the management gravel extraction. The report identifies a number of options and assessment criteria for gravel management, as a basis for public consultation.

Council has not identified a preferred approach, preferring to wait for feedback from stakeholders. Following consideration of stakeholder comments, council will identify its preferred approach by the end of June 2006.

Please send us your feedback on the Feedback Form provided. Feedback is sought by the 30th of April 2006, and can be emailed or posted to the addresses provided on the feedback form.
