Riparian Guidelines

Managing Waterways on Canterbury Farms

Environment Canterbury has produced a set of riparian guidelines for the management of smaller waterways, drains and wetlands in Canterbury. The guidelines include an overview booklet of general information together with three companion guidelines providing specific information for the main waterway types typical of farmed land in the Canterbury region – the lowland plains, hill country and inland basin areas.

These guidelines are designed to increase understanding of the roles played by the riparian margin along different types of streams, and to provide practical advice for farmers on how to improve the health of their streams at the same time as enhancing their overall farming operations.
