Transport in Canterbury

Biodiesel Bus Photo Land transport is fundamental to our quality of life in Canterbury. It provides people with access to education, employment, services and recreational opportunities. It allows for the movement of freight, essential to our economic well-being. Roads serve as community spaces and our transport choices determine whether streets are pleasant and safe. How we travel and how often we travel affects and is affected by where we live, work and the other places we spend our time. This in turn, has an impact on our physical environment through emissions of pollutants, noise and greenhouse gases.

Environment Canterbury is responsible for the development and implementation of a Regional Land Transport Strategy – a document that identifies Canterbury’s future land transport needs, the roles of all modes of transport and provides a direction for the development of the land transport system for the next ten years.
