Waste

landfill

Did you know...you could fill the WestpacTrust Centre about three and a half times over with the amount of waste (263,000 tonnes) the Canterbury region generates each year.

It is an ever-growing problem and one that we just can’t ignore. Waste affects every part of the environment - such as land, air, and water – and unless we take positive action towards reducing it, it will eventually become overwhelming.

So where does it all go? What part can we all play in making sure the mountain doesn’t grow?

What we offer

First in, first reduce - A free, facilitated programme for Year 1 - 6 students. First in, first reduce explores the meanings of the 5 R's - reduce, reuse, recycle, recover and residual management - with a specific focus on reduction, packaging, and what action WE can take when it comes to waste!

Tip the Balance - On Waste - a fun, interactive cartoon-based way to learn about waste, aimed at year 5-8 students. It highlights how actions have reactions and how individual choices influence the war on waste. To add to the experience and learning, student workbook and facilitator guides are available. The books are intended to work alongside the interactive CD ROM and form the base of a long term inquiry based learning experience.

Your Environment, Canterbury (E Box): Nobody wants a landfill in their back garden or next door. But what do we do with all the stuff we deem RUBBISH? Find out about the 5R’s - reduce, reuse, recycle, recover and residual management, including practical ideas to reduce waste.
