Pollution Prevention Guide

Environment Canterbury has recently produced a Pollution Prevention Guide [PPG]. The guide is an environmental tool that aims to provide business with a self-help guide to pollution prevention. It is basically a set of checklists for you to use to carry out an environmental audit of your company.

PPG CoverWho should use the PPG?

Any business that has:

 Chemicals or bulk products
 A storm water drain
A waste skip or left-over materials
Facilities for washing down product or machinery

What topics does the Pollution Prevention Guide Cover?

The guide is split into six modules covering drainage, spills, air, transport, storage and handling and housekeeping. Some of the information may not apply to your business. We advice you to read through the all the modules and then use the parts that relate to your company.

How do you use the PPG?

It is easy:

  • read the notes at the front of each module - they will explain why problems occur walk round your site with the checklist and tick or cross every item on it
  • write on the Action List at the back of the folder everything you need to do to reduce the pollution from your site. Or use our interactive Word document to automatically generate an Action List based on the data you enter.

How much does the PPG cost?

It is free to any business in Canterbury.

But wait there’s more!

To accompany the guide we have also produced a series of 10 posters aimed at raising environmental awareness in the work place. View all the posters available.

Hazardous Substances Poster

These posters are free! You can download PDF versions of our Posters here or contact customer services to obtain a hard copy. If your site is visited by a Environment Canterbury Compliance Monitoring Officer, they also will have copies.

How can I get a copy of the PPG?

There are several options for getting a copy of the PPG.

  1. Order a hard copy from us. Although, as you will see below, electronic forms are available, we recommend that in the first instance you get a hard copy. Don’t forget it is free.
  2. You can download a PDF version of the guide.
  3. You can download an interactive Microsoft Word version of the guide. We describe this word version as interactive because we have adapted this document to enables you to input directly into the checklists. Once complete you click a Generate Action List button and an action list based on your responses will be generated. Because the action list in a word format, you can edit it to fit your company, save it, and modify it as you would with any word document.
