Terms and Conditions
- The Environment Enhancement Fund supports activities that seek to protect and restore indigenous plants or animals and their habitat.
- Only individuals or groups proposing environmentally sustainable projects
are eligible. The Environment Enhancement Fund cannot directly support
research projects or beautification projects; projects that generate personal or commercial profits or compensate individuals; projects that are a government, local authority or other public body (such as producer boards) responsibility or requirements. Native plantings led by a community group may be excluded from this clause.
- The Environment Enhancement Fund usually provides one-off grants
up to a maximum of $20,000 for each project. The financial assistance
may cover up to 100% of a project’s eligible costs, but a landowner
contribution will usually be required. Labour contributions may be
included. Percentage of funding, funding amount and project costs
funded are at the discretion of Environment Canterbury and will be
determined by the ecological significance of the project.
- Applications will be accepted throughout the year and will be acknowledged upon receipt. Applicants will be advised of the funding decision in writing by September 30 and April 30 each year.
- Please include, where appropriate, statements of support from project partners.
- Environment Canterbury will determine funding allocations and its decisions will be final. Approval may be subject to conditions.
- Payment: Environment Canterbury will require successful applicants to sign a legal agreement clarifying how funds will be spent.
- Environment Canterbury reserves the right to publicise details of recipients
and projects.
- The project must be started within 12 months of the grant being approved,
and is expected to be completed within two years of the date it was started.
- An audit of the project will be undertaken upon completion. Receipts for
project expenditure must be kept for auditing purposes.
- Funding will not be given retrospectively.
- For all projects where the applicant is not the landowner and does not have the authority to undertake the proposed works a letter of support from the landowner must be provided with the application.
- Legal protection is not required but priority will be given to projects where
protection exists or where it is being implemented.
- A management plan for the project must be included with the application
form and approved by Environment Canterbury.
- To qualify for the Honda TreeFund, projects must use New Zealand native trees to support any of the following:

- Regional parks or other planting for beautification
- Biodiversity protection and restoration
- Urban stream enhancement
