Environment Canterbury has a ban on outdoor burning on all residential properties and all rural properties close to sensitive activities. You can get rid of your green rubbish by composting, shredding or chipping, using refuse stations or recyling.
Composting
Up to 46% of general household waste consists of green and kitchen waste. Composting can reduce your household waste considerably and provide you with valuable compost for your garden. Read more information on successful composting. You can also get information from or follow a course through Sustainable Living.
Shredding and chipping
Most shredders bought from DIY retailers can turn small branches into useful mulch. Larger and faster chippers can be hired from most hire companies. Some communities have organised to have a chipper in the community for the day to share costs.
Refuse stations and recycling
Green waste can be dropped off at most refuse stations, usually at a lower cost than general waste. Check out what cannot be dropped off as green waste before going there, otherwise you may have to pay the rate for general waste.
Collection of green waste
Some councils or private companies will collect green waste at a very reasonable cost in some areas.
Recyclables
The Christchurch City Council has put together a recycling directory with companies taking recyclables. Some councils take recyclables free of charge at the refuse and/or transfer stations.
Minimise your waste
The best way to reduce the costs of disposing of household waste is to minimise the creation of it. Check out the Christchurch City Council website on how to minimise your household waste or get information from or follow a course or workshop from Sustainable Living.
