| The storm water system collects rainfall through drains. Storm water pipes carry the runoff to a nearby water body such as a river, beach or ground water aquifer.
Any contaminants in the storm water will also end up in our rivers, harbours or aquifers.
The storm water system is the most likely pathway for pollution if spills and leaks occur on site. To reduce pollution from your site:
- Keep yards, car parks and other surfaces that drain to storm water clean and tidy.
- Label storm water drains in blue to indicate they should only carry storm water.
- Inspect storm water sumps at least four times a year.
- Inspect oil interceptors and grease traps at least once a month.
- Have oil interceptors, grease traps and storm water sumps cleaned regularly by reputable waste contractors.
- Clean up all spills immediately, especially in outdoor areas.
Only clean uncontaminated rain water should go down your storm water grates.
