Solvents and thinners include things like turpentine, kerosene and mineral spirits. Solvents and thinners have an almost unlimited shelf-life if they are properly sealed, so keep and use at a later date.
Re-use solvents and thinners by following these simple steps:
- Let used turpentine or brush cleaners sit in a closed container until the paint particles settle out.
- Pour off the clear liquid which can be re-used.
- Add an absorbent (e.g. cat litter, newspaper) to the residue until it becomes dry.
Unwanted solvents and thinners should be taken to a ‘household hazardous waste drop-off’ facility.

Don’t pour solvents and thinners down household or storm water drains, into the sewer or onto the ground.
