Activities and actions

The Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee was the first of the 10 zone committees established throughout Canterbury.
The focus of the Hurunui–Waiau Zone Committee has been on developing its Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) following numerous meetings with groups, community organisations and the public.
In August 2011, the final ZIP was received by Environment Canterbury and the Hurunui District Council. It includes 66 recommendations to councils and other parties and is designed to provide an integrated approach to water management in the zone while achieving the desired social, environment, cultural and economic outcomes.
Environment Canterbury Commissioners endorsed the ZIP as "the basis for the design and realignment of work programmes, for drafting regional plan provisions, and for preparation of a draft Long Term Plan".
At its meeting in February, the first for this year, the zone committee met with members of the Waitohi Selection Panel to discuss its recommendations for water storage.
The committee also received a summary of submissions on the proposed Hurunui Waiau Regional Plan as well as an update from Meridian Energy on its Amuri Integrated Water Project and a presentation on the Hurunui Water Project.
In March and April the committee received updates on the Hurunui Water Project, Land Use and Water Quality implementation and the Waipara River Management Strategy.
