Zone committee Update
Over recent months the Waimakariri Zone Committee members have had numerous briefings, field-trips and meetings with community members to bring itself up to speed on a wide variety of water-related issues.
At its December meeting the zone committee finalised its draft ZIP in preparation to present it to Environment Canterbury on 15 December.
Environment Canterbury voted unanimously to “endorse the Waimakariri Zone Implementation Programme as the basis for the design and realignment of work programmes, for drafting regional plan provisions and for preparation of a draft Long Term Plan”. The Waimakariri District Council received and endorsed the ZIP in early 2012.
Stakeholders and the community were engaged to provide feedback on priorities for water management which feed in to the ZIP. Around 80 people attended the meetings held around the zone in May.
The committee also set up four working groups with key stakeholders to develop pathways and actions to achieve the priority outcomes. The priorities for the zone include; lowland streams, Ashley/Rakahuri River, Waimakariri River, drinking water, relaiable Iirrigation, water and nutrient management and the zone's contribution to the regional economy.
The recommendations from these working groups fed in to the committee's ZIP which was made available for public review and feedback in October via a series of public meetings.
At its February meeting, the first for 2012, the zone committee discussed key implementation ares of its ZIP before going on to discuss the Land and Water Regional Plan and receiving a presentation from Waimakariri Irrigation.
The Waimakariri Zone Committee will next meet on 5 March.
