Road Metals Company Limited has applied for 7 resource consents from Environment Canterbury to operate a proposed shingle quarry and concrete batching plant located at Wards Road, Rolleston. Road Metals has requested that these applications be determined by the Environment Court instead of Environment Canterbury at first instance (under section 87D of the Resource Management Act). The key reasons cited for the request were that there will be a shortage of aggregate for the rebuilding of Christchurch, and that the site will allow deposition of clean fill created by the demolition of buildings in Christchurch. One consent application has also been lodged with the Selwyn District Council.
