Outstanding features added to the application
- Salmon habitat - the spawning habitat of the South Branch, and fish passage through the mainstem.
- Sports fishery (combination of brown trout and salmon) applies to the whole river.
- Whitewater recreation - South Branch. The South Branch has similar whitewater amenity values as the mainstem, but has more of a 'wilderness' feel to it. Access is difficult through this reach, however, the status of access is not permanent and if access was improved it is predicted it would be a popular piece of river.
- Specific recognition of which reaches contribute to outstanding characteristics in other reaches of the river.
Restrictions or prohibitions sought
- Existing restriction on prohibiting damming of the mainstem of the Lower Hurunui River also to protect the sports fishery throughout the whole river.
- Restriction on fish screens is more detailed - describes different types of screens and mesh sizes.
Considered against relevant provisions
As required in the Environment Canterbury Act, consideration against sections 50(2), (3) and (4) including the vision and principles of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy, and more explicit emphasis on relevant provisions of Part 2 of the Resource Management Act.
