Natural Resources Regional Plan Chapter 2 - Ngāi Tahu and the Management of Natural Resources

View the minor corrections in the Operative Natural Resources Regional Plan >>

In Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island), one tribe, Ngāi Tahu occupies all but the most northern part of the island. The entire Canterbury region lies within the rohe (area) of Ngāi Tahu.  (Please note that, in this Plan, the terms “Ngāi Tahu” and “Ngāi Tahu Whanui” have the same meaning.)

Chapter 2 of the Natural Resources Regional Plan (NRRP) explains the role Ngāi Tahu have in resource management, the resource management issues that are significant to Ngāi Tahu and the outcomes they desire for the region.  The chapter also identifies areas that are affected by statutory acknowledgements or other instruments under the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998.

Chapter 2 will assist in identifying potential effects an activity may have with regard to Ngāi Tahu and will help to inform anyone applying for resource consent if it is likely to be beneficial to the applicant to talk to Ngāi Tahu, papatipu rūnanga or hapu when preparing an application for resource consent.
