Air quality may well be a problem in other towns in Canterbury but there are no definite plans for a wider ban. As well as the four centres, Environment Canterbury monitors air quality in Timaru, Waimate and Geraldine.
Air quality in Waimate and Geraldine exceeds the National Environmental Standards limit less frequently and so may not require interventions such as a specific rule to achieve the National Environment Standards.
The monitoring in Timaru shows us that without any intervention it is unlikely that it will meet the National Environmental Standards. Therefore it may be necessary to consider an Air Plan for Timaru that may restrict some appliances being installed into residential properties.
