You can collect firewood for private use only from the following areas:
- Waimakariri River and Ashley River/Rakahuri - please refer to the fire wood collection rules for the Waimakariri River Regional Park.
- In the southern area (Rangitata to Waitaki Rivers) you need to get a firewood permit. No permits will be issued for Rangitata, Opihi (above Pleasant Point), Pareora, Orari (upstream SH1), and Waihi (between Coach Rd& Woodbury Bridge) riverbeds.
Permits are processed instantly at no charge and issued for a duration for 6 months. Permits may be obtained from:
• Ashburton depot (David Maharey), cellphone 027 435 1476) for Ashburton and Hinds rivers.
• Twizel office (Ray Newman, cellphone 027 476 8534) for upper Waitaki catchment.
• Timaru office (reception, ext 8899) balance of area.
• Chainsaws are permitted for use on fallen or dead timber. For commercial use please refer customers to Bruce Scarlett ext 8842.
