The installation of a clean air approved woodburner, if it is a replacement for an existing burner or open fire, is a permitted activity and does not require resource consent from Environment Canterbury
If you are wishing to install a woodburner into a new house or a house that does not currently have a woodburner and your home is in Clean Air Zone One you will need to apply to Environment Canterbury for a resource consent. However this is not a simple process and can be expensive with no guarantee that it will be granted.
In the Kaiapoi Clean Air Zone One there is an existing pollution issue and at times during the winter, Kaiapoi has poor air quality largely caused by home heating.
In order to clean up the air and meet the National Environmental Standard for air quality in Kaiapoi, Environment Canterbury is trying to restrict the number of solid fuel burners.
