Environment Canterbury is currently proposing a variation to its Air Plan rules that will allow home owners to use old wood burners and open fires that would normally be banned in emergency situations.
Emergency use is defined as an unexpected power outage or when the power supply will be unavailable for a period greater than 3 hours. It does not cover customers who have had their power supply disconnected due to non payment.
This variation covers the towns currently included in the Air Plan. These include Christchurch, Ashburton, Christchurch and Kaiapoi.
Initial submissions on this proposed variation closed on 26th of February. Further submissions on the initial submissions were sought and submissions closed on Friday 30th April 2010.
Rules are expected to be formally operative by October 2010.
