In submissions to the 2007/08 Annual Plan, where the gravel charge was notified, submitters requested that they be given a ‘voice’ in the management of the gravel resource.
Council established the Gravel Liaison Committee as an advisory committee to articulate the views of stakeholders in relation to the management of the river gravel in the region.
The committee has a membership of 12, comprising elected representatives from the gravel extraction industry (4, with one for the area north of the Waimakariri Catchment, one for the Waimakariri Catchment, one for the area south of the Waimakariri Catchment to the Hinds River, one for the area Rangitata to Waitaki), similarly 4 for the River Rating Districts, and ex-officio appointees representing Ngai Tahu, Fish and Game, Department of Conservation and an Environment Canterbury appointed Councillor.
Contact details for any of the above are available on the Environment Canterbury website or from the Gravel Resources Officer. Through any of these committee members, a Councillor or the Gravel Resources Officer you can raise concerns or items for consideration.
