For a decade from 1997, Canterbury people consistently said air quality was their number one environmental issue. It is now second only to water quality.
The Air Plan (Chapter 3 of the Natural Resource Regional Plan) was first notified for public consultation in 2001. Since then, consultation, mediation and decisions from the Environment Court have shaped the rules we have now.
There are now operative rules and strategies for enforcing them in Christchurch, Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Ashburton.
