In urban areas power is usually restored relatively quickly after a power cut. If you are worried about power cuts, power shortages or the price of electricity you may choose to replace an older solid fuel burner with a newer low-emission woodburner, a gas heater or a diesel burner that does not require electricity to operate.
Or you may install a heater that needs electricity and keep your old woodburner or open fire for emergency use. If you wish to take advantage of Clean Heat subsidies and/or interest-free loans in Christchurch, Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Ashburton you may be required to remove your existing heating. Participants in the Clean Heat Project in Timaru are allowed to retain their old burners or open fires for emergency use only.
