Land Improvement Agreements negotiated by Council and the four former Catchment Authorities were established under Subsection (3) of Section 30 of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Act 1941.
They were negotiated on a voluntary basis for soil conservation and erosion control. A programme of works was undertaken by the landholder in return for payment of subsidies or grants to agreed conditions.
In Canterbury there are about 500 agreements where it was found that Council has an ongoing legal interest. They cover the following plan types:
Soil and Water Conservatin Plan
Wind Erosion Control Plan
Erosion Control Plan
Rabbit and Land Management Property Plan
Regional Firebreak Scheme
Property owners can check the property title(s) to see if a Land Improvement Agreement is shown as an interest.
