The Community Initiatives Programme helps local communities to control pests at a higher level than what the Regional Pest Management Strategy (RPMS) requires, and the Surveillance programme which recognises the invaluable contribution of keen-eyed individuals who see and report over 100 plant pests now listed as a national concern. For example Banks Peninsula opted for a community initiated possum control programme.
