You’ll need to have suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available to clean up spills.
Here is a list of some protective items:
• protective gloves
• safety glasses
• a respirator
• steel toe-capped gum boots
• overalls
You will also need equipment to clean up the spill such as a brush
and shovel. Thought should be given to the types of hazardous substances
you have on-site and what equipment you’ll most likely to need in an emergency
.
For example, non-sparking or polyethylene shovels would be most
suitable for cleaning up oil or fuel spills to prevent setting the spilled
substance alight, or if you are using chemicals on-site, provide some
nitrile-dipped heavy duty gloves in your kit to provide suitable protection
to the person cleaning up the spill.
Additional items could include an isolation drum where you can
place broken packaging or containers that still contain product so
that you can retain some of your product. Another idea may be to
install a wind sock on a suitable building or location on site so that
if you have a release of gases or vapours, you know which way
the wind may carry them and can warn staff, adjacent properties
and/or the authorities.
