Only anglers with a current fishing license can get keys for the Waimakariri River Regional Park night gates. The key is valid for 12 months and then swapped at no cost annually on 1st of October at the start of the fishing season. The keys are numbered individually and are for your personal use, i.e. they are not transferable. With the key you will be given a brochure which includes conditions for key use and a map with night gate locations.
To obtain a key you will need:
- a completed Waimakariri River Regional Park Key Issue Form (available from Environment Canterbury Customer Services or
- your fishing license
- another form of identification such as your driver's license
- your vehicle license plate number
- a $30 bond which will be refunded when the key is returned.

• When returning the key, proof of identity will be
required to ensure the person returning the key is the
person who paid the bond.
• Persons returning keys on behalf of someone else
are required to present a signed letter authorising
them to act as their agent.
• Returned broken keys will be replaced free of charge
during the year of issue.
• Bonds will only be refunded when keys are returned.
• Bonds are non-refundable if keys are lost.
