The whitebait regulations are administered by Department of Conservation, people can contact their local office, or call 03 341 9102, or check www.doc.govt.nz/whitebaiting
The rules include:
- Whitebaiters are allowed to fish between the daylight hours of 5am and 8pm (or 6am and 9pm during daylight saving).
- Each person is allowed to fish with only one net at a time and must remain within 10m of the net.
- The combined length of net and go-by must not exceed 6m, or more than one third of the width of the waterway.
- It is not permitted to fish for whitebait within 20m of any floodgate, culvert or confluence ( where two waterways meet).
