Christchurch has poor air quality at times, particularly during the winter. The largest cause of winter pollution is home heating. This is why Environment Canterbury have prohibited the use of open fires and old woodburners between 1 April and 30 September each year within the Christchurch Clean Air Zone 1. Environment Canterbury will be enforcing this rule from 1 April 2010.
Outside the winter period winter air pollution is generally not a problem and householders can use their open fire or old woodburner e.g. for heating hot water if it is connected to a wetback.
