After considering public submissions the Environmental Risk Management Authority ERMA decided to ban it because the risks of its continued use were considered to outweigh the benefits. This chemical is toxic to humans and very toxic to the aquatic environment, bioaccumulates (accumulates in organisms), and is persistent in the environment.
There are alternative chemicals that do the same job. Its use has also declined over the last 10 years and it was typically used as a last resort.
