Of the total 90 sample sites, 17 are in the Christchurch urban area and 73 through-out the rest of Canterbury. Where possible sample sites are on public land as this is less likely to have been extensively modified, sprayed or fertilised with chemicals that may affect the results. Samples were taken between 28/2/2006 and 16/3/2006. In the Phase 1 report (URS, 2005) the number of samples required in each soil group to attain a statistically significant result was calculated. At each sample site an area 80m x 80m was divided equally into 4 quadrants and a sample from each quadrant taken. Of the 4 samples at each site; 2 were from a depth of 0-150mm and two from a depth of 400-500mm. From these samples concentrations of; Arsenic, Boron, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Lead, Manganese, Mercury, Nickel, and Zinc were measured in mg/kg. To account for limited data two levels of trace element concentration in each soil group have been calculated. Level 1 gives the maximum concentration values of the above trace elements measured in each soil group. Level 2 gives the the maximum concentration plus half the interquartile range. Half the interquartile range functions as a buffer when using these results to compare a new soil sample against. When a new soil sample is compared against "Trace Elements Level 1" and "Level 2" the site from which the sample was taken will only be considered contaiminated if the new samples values exceed those in level 1 and 2. If the samples concentration values are above Level 1 values but below level 2 values the site is not considered by ECan to be 'contaminated' but additional information maybe required to make a complete assessment.
