Principal consents planner
About the role | Kōrero mō te Tūranga
The principal consents planner plays a critical role, providing technical and planning expertise and leadership within the consents section.
You’ll support the development of team members by mentoring and coaching to build the capability of technical expertise across the consents section, whilst remaining in a hands-on capacity.

- Make legally defensible decisions on applications for resource consent.
- Train consent planners/team members on the delivery of best consenting outcomes.
- Support the development of resource management plans.
- Processing of complex consents.

Senior consents planner

As the senior consents planner, you’ll be exposed to some of the most exciting and significant projects – Including irrigation schemes, waste-to-energy plants, and water management. Exposure to these projects will enhance your career significantly.

We encourage our team to get out on-site to engage with applicants and this also enables staff to have a clear understanding of the site and any further information that may be required to assess the environmental effects of an application.

You’ll play a key role in establishing and maintaining a healthy and vibrant team culture, supporting our consents planners with their workloads, growth, and development whilst maintaining key stakeholder relationships. You are pivotal to enabling our people to thrive. You’ll be leading and inspiring the next generation of consents planners. No two days are the same, the work is exciting and plentiful.

- Foster a strong team culture by living and promoting the our values and supporting team well-being.
- Deliver an effective programme of training for team members and wider section.
- Collaboratively manage the consents workload, including the allocation of work.
- Effectively resolve complex problems.
- Identify and successfully manage risks including environmental; reputational; legislative; organisational; and financial.
- Help facilitate growth in the understanding of Te Ao Maori in the consents section.

Consents planner

As the consents planner, you’ll have responsibility for the processing of resource consent applications. You’ll bring knowledge of relevant legislation and regional and local Council planning frameworks.

We make positive environmental outcomes become reality through the processing of resource consents. This role supports a team of consent planners focused on a specific area of our region to ensure the efficient processing of resource consent applications.

- Lodging technical & cultural advice requests on behalf of Consent Planners.
- Ensure customer queries are handled effectively.
- Schedule, coordinate, & support internal & external meetings.
- Upskill others in the use of systems, databases, & processes.
