2025/26 funding round

For 2025/26, $500k was made available. Applications could be made for amounts between $5k and $30k and 65 applications were received from across the region and 38 received funding requesting approximately $1M.

Clarence River Rafting Company

Project: Waiau Toa/Clarence Pest Control Plan
Funding agreed: $20,900

For over 15 years, Clarence River Rafting has carried out pest control along the river, supported by local and internal funding, reflecting a strong ongoing commitment to protecting and enhancing the river environment. This project continues invasive pest plant control through the lower gorge of the Waiau Toa/Clarence River, supporting collaborative weed management under the Waiau Toa Clarence River Weed Control Strategy (2025–2035).


Department of Conservation

Project: Lake Rotorua Wildlife Reserve Restoration
Funding agreed: $10,000

This project enhances the ecological value of Lake Rotorua while helping build conservation skills within the local community. Work includes predator trapping, pest plant control, fencing improvements, biodiversity monitoring, and accessibility upgrades to support the long-term health of the lake and Kahutara River ecosystem.

Project: Waiau Toa/Clarence – Acheron Willow Control
Funding agreed: $5,000

This collaborative project between DOC, Environment Canterbury, and Marlborough District Council supports ongoing willow eradication in the Acheron River and tributaries, identified as a priority action within the Clarence / Waiau Toa Catchment River Weed Control Strategy (2025–2035).


Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura

Project: Upper Lyell Creek Riparian Planting
Funding agreed: $14,100

This riparian planting and freshwater habitat restoration project in the upper Lyell Creek catchment aims to improve stream health, stabilise banks, reduce sediment and nutrient runoff, and support aquatic biodiversity, including the return of kōura (freshwater crayfish).

Amberley Environmental Restoration Group (AERG)

Project: Amberley Wetland Restoration Management Plan
Funding agreed: $6,000

This project develops a long-term management plan for the Amberley Wetland to guide restoration, ecological enhancement, and flood management while helping prevent the wetland from becoming dominated by grey willow.


Department of Conservation

Project: Mt Brown Weed Control
Funding agreed: $12,000

Targeted weed control at Mt Brown will protect nationally significant limestone ecosystems and threatened plant species by suppressing invasive weeds and restoring open rockland habitats.

Project: Sharks Tooth Island Enhancement
Funding agreed: $15,000

This project enhances habitat on Shark’s Tooth Island within the Waiau-Uwha River to support breeding tarapirohe / black-fronted terns through weed removal, channel widening, and island elevation works.


Hurunui District Landcare Group

Project: Hurunui–Waiau Covenant Predator Trapping Programme
Funding agreed: $7,000

Funding supports the expansion of automated predator trapping across QEII covenants to help protect native biodiversity and strengthen community-led conservation efforts.

Project: Dry Creek Biodiversity Habitat Enhancement
Funding agreed: $10,000

This project builds on long-term riparian planting and wetland restoration work in the Dry Creek catchment to improve biodiversity, water quality, and flood resilience within the Hurunui River system.

Project: Bittern & Inanga Rushland
Funding agreed: $10,000

This multi-stage restoration project protects important rushland habitat through woody weed control and stock exclusion, supporting threatened wetland species including bittern, mudfish, and inanga.

Funding agreed: $16,000

Funding supports ongoing woody weed control within connected wetland remnants near the Garry River to improve wetland condition and encourage regeneration of native vegetation.

Project: O’Kair Lagoon Stage 2 Fencing & Planting
Funding agreed: $10,000

This project expands protected riparian areas around O’Kair Lagoon through fencing and indigenous planting to improve habitat for native fish and bird species.

Project: Springvale Wetland – Surveillance & Mop-up Control of Woody Weeds
Funding agreed: $14,000

Building on five years of successful pest plant control, this project continues invasive woody weed management to support natural regeneration within the Springvale Wetland ecosystem.

This project delivers coordinated in-river action and community engagement initiatives to improve the health and resilience of Christchurch’s urban waterways.


River Care Awa Limited

Project: Te Tuna Tāone Urban Eel Action Learning Programme
Funding agreed: $13,250

This education-focused programme empowers students across Christchurch to support urban longfin tuna and freshwater wellbeing through hands-on environmental learning and restoration activities.


Styx Living Laboratory Trust

Project: Raising Awareness and Taking Action on Sediment in the Styx River
Funding agreed: $15,000

The project combines education, demonstration sites, and public engagement to reduce sediment impacts on the Styx River and improve freshwater habitat health.


Christchurch Envirohub Trust

Project: Stormwater Superhero Trailer (Cross-zone Project)
Funding agreed: $12,000

This mobile interactive education resource promotes freshwater and stormwater stewardship through community events, school visits, and hands-on learning activities across multiple CWMS zones.

Banks Peninsula

Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust

Project: BPCT Operational Costs
Funding agreed: $15,000

Funding supports the Trust’s catchment-scale restoration, biodiversity protection, freshwater monitoring, and community engagement work across Banks Peninsula.


Living Springs Trust

Project: Lower Allandale Stream Freshwater Resilience Programme
Funding agreed: $9,980

This project strengthens freshwater resilience through predator control infrastructure and community education within the lower Allandale Stream catchment.

Project: Te Kori a te Kō – Saltmarsh Project
Funding agreed: $15,000

This harbour-wide ecological assessment investigates the role of saltmarsh systems in climate adaptation, freshwater protection, biodiversity, and erosion reduction in Akaroa Harbour.

Project: Wainui Community Nursery

The Wainui Community Nursery will grow eco-sourced native plants to support local restoration projects, biodiversity enhancement, and long-term catchment resilience.

Project: Scamander Wetland Restoration – Wilding Willow & Conifer Control
Funding agreed: $30,000

This project continues large-scale weed eradication and wetland restoration within the Scamander Wetland to protect indigenous vegetation, hydrology, and wildlife habitat.


Conservation Volunteers New Zealand (CVNZ)

Project: CVNZ Supporting Arthur’s Pass Wildlife Trust
Funding agreed: $8,935.68

Volunteers will support ecological restoration work in Arthur’s Pass through weed control, predator management, and biodiversity protection activities.

This project supports ongoing weed control within the Galloway Wetland to protect rare wetland species and restore ecological health.

Project: Ashburton Forks Catchment Group Freshwater Monitoring
Funding agreed: $5,592.00

Funding supports continued freshwater monitoring and eDNA testing to strengthen understanding of water quality and biodiversity within the Ashburton / Hakatere catchment.


Mid Canterbury Catchment Collective with the Greenstreet Catchment Group

Project: Eyes in the Sky: Drone Surveying to Guide Riparian Management in Greenstreet
Funding agreed: $10,826.85

Drone surveying across 24km of waterways will provide detailed riparian condition data to support long-term restoration planning and freshwater management.

This project expands predator control across Mount Hutt Forest and surrounding reserves to support native biodiversity and headwater ecosystem health.

This project restores the Papaka Stream through willow removal, streambank stabilisation, fencing, and native planting to improve freshwater and ecosystem health.


M&M Rural Partnership

Project: Taiko Stream Willow Removal for Mudfish Critical Habitat
Funding agreed: $4,741.52

The project removes invasive crack willow from Taiko Stream to improve critical habitat for Canterbury mudfish and support long-term freshwater restoration.

Project: Rosewill Valley Road/Washdyke Flat, Raupō Wetland – Fencing Project

This project protects part of the Washdyke Flat Wetland through fencing works that will support future weed control, predator management, and native planting.

This project supports ongoing crack willow removal within the Waihao River catchment to improve river function, reduce flood risks, and enhance freshwater health.

This community-led project aims to restore wetlands across the Ahuriri catchment to improve water quality, biodiversity, and long-term catchment resilience.
