Disc golf course ready for action in Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo Regional Park has a new activity in time for summer - disc golf.

There's a family-friendly course and an advanced one. Both are located on the lakeside of the park, near the NZMCA caravan park, and the dog park.

Both nine-hole courses have their baskets in place and are playable but further additions are coming for the advanced course during the next year.

Billy Kerr, chairman of the Lake Tekapo Recreational Park Society, said this project was two years in the making.

"We wanted to find a unique way to make the most of our park to provide people with an opportunity to experience what the Lake Tekapo area has to offer," Kerr said.

"It's a great achievement we can be proud of that we have been able to secure the funding to put this together."

The disc golf courses were part of a wider strategy to enhance the appeal of Lake Tekapo Regional Park.

"We have big plans for this part of the park and look forward to being able to build BBQ areas in the future too."

Work for a pump park cycle track is also scheduled to begin in March.

Kerr urged people to get in the park and see what disc golf was all about.

"This is a fun, family-friendly activity and we'd love to see people making the most of the new courses."

Simon Woods, team leader parks and forests for Environment Canterbury, said the disc golf development was an exciting addition for Lake Tekapo.

"This is an attraction that can be enjoyed by locals, visitors and tourists," Woods said.

"It is great to see our parks being utilised for activities like this and it will draw more people to them."
