Canterbury enters summer with good soil moisture levels, but warm weather forecast

Average rainfall over spring following a return to normal winter rainfall has left Canterbury with healthy soil moisture at the start of the summer irrigation season. However, a weak La Niña weather pattern is expected to bring higher temperatures and lower river and stream flows as summer continues.

The pattern of dry winters Canterbury has experienced in recent times ended this year, with the region seeing a return to normal or even above normal rainfall levels in most areas.

Despite healthy rainfall, groundwater levels remain low in some parts of Canterbury.

Summer seasonal snapshot

Our Canterbury water this season webpage reports on the water levels in our rivers and streams, groundwater and soil, as well as the rainfall over the previous three months.

It compares these levels against the long-term median level for the same season in previous years.

The Spring 2021 update saw healthy water flows and soil moisture levels after a return to normal or above normal rainfall over winter.
