Fun Day will launch pump track at McLeans Forest
On Sunday 2 October, we will officially open the new pump track and drag strip at McLeans Forest. The launch day will include bike races, prizes, track demonstrations and a sausage sizzle.
Parks and Forests Manager Chuck Dowdell said the new features will be an asset to the community.
“We are delighted to launch the new pump track and drag strip, where mountain bike riders can build their skills and have fun. We’re hoping this will also encourage new riders to get out there and have a go. We see this as added value to the offerings at McLeans Island.”
Races for fastest lap, longest pump (no pedalling), and drag races will take place throughout the day. Regional park rangers will award prizes to race winners and will also hand out spot prizes on the day.
Experienced mountain bike riders from the Christchurch Singletrack Club will demonstrate how to use the pump track at about 10.00am, 11.00am, noon, and 1.00pm.
The free sausage sizzle will be held between 11am and 2pm.
The new pump track is designed for riders to practice their pumping, cornering and jumping skills.
Drag strip to test riders' skills
The drag strip includes multiple rollers and is wide enough for two riders to test their skills side by side.
This original feature, designed by Dirt Trailbuilding, may be the first of its kind in New Zealand. It was inspired by the Red Bull Straight Rhythm track in California.
This is one of several new developments planned to enhance the visitor experience at McLeans Forest. Over the next three years, we will be adding a skills track, mini road system and food forest.
McLeans Forest, part of Waimakariri River Regional Park, is already a popular destination for mountain bikers, boasting 17km of mountain bike loops suitable for all ages and abilities. There are also 11km of walking and running tracks.
