Contestable funds now open to boost community-led environmental actions
Community groups across Waitaha Canterbury can now apply for three contestable funds. Whether you’re restoring native bush and wetlands, improving local waterways or delivering catchment-scale action, these funds are designed to back practical, on-the-ground initiatives that make a measurable difference.
Three funding streams are available:
Waitaha Action to Impact Fund
This fund, established in 2021, supports community-led environmental projects with clear, measurable outcomes. It has helped dozens of groups across Canterbury restore ecosystems, strengthen biodiversity, and lead innovative local solutions.

Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) Action Plan Fund
This fund supports projects that put the Canterbury Water Management Strategy’s local action plans into practice. This includes initiatives led by rūnanga, catchment groups, and councils that improve freshwater health and resilience at a community level.
Council leaders back community-led environmental action
Canterbury Regional Council Deputy Chair Iaean Cranwell says that as a region, we are at our best when we support local communities to take the lead.
“These funds recognise the energy, knowledge, and commitment that exists across Waitaha. By investing in local initiatives, we’re helping people turn good ideas into lasting environmental outcomes.”
Council’s Environmental Regulation and Protection core service lead, Councillor Claire McKay, says these funds are about collaboration and amplifying local action plans.
“They bring together landowners, rūnanga, and community groups to deliver practical solutions which improve our environment.
“By working together, we can achieve outcomes that benefit both people and the environment,” Cr McKay said.
