Environment Canterbury supports grassroots community projects
Communities across Waitaha Canterbury are stepping up in extraordinary ways to protect, restore and strengthen the environment they care about.
There has once again been strong demand for contestable funds administered by Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury), highlighting the scale of grass-roots ambition across the region.
This year, the Waitaha Action to Impact Fund, CWMS Action Plan Fund and Christchurch and Banks Peninsula Biodiversity Fund attracted a combined 152 applications, with Papatipu Rūnanga, community groups, schools, landowners and organisations collectively seeking more than $3.7M to bring environmental projects to life.
With $1.1M available for projects, demand far exceeded available funding - a powerful reflection of the passion, innovation and commitment communities across Canterbury are bringing to environmental action.
Funding projects that restore waterways, biodiversity and habitats
From restoring native habitats and enhancing biodiversity, to improving freshwater health, strengthening catchment resilience and empowering local leadership, successful projects span the region and represent a significant investment in Canterbury’s environmental future.
Together, these funds are backing practical, community-led solutions that will create healthier waterways, thriving ecosystems and stronger local connections - helping turn local ideas into lasting regional impact.

Strong demand for community-led environmental projects
Environment Canterbury Deputy Chair Iaean Cranwell says the response sends a clear message: communities are ready and willing to lead.
“The response to these funds has been nothing short of inspiring. Across Waitaha, people are bringing forward thoughtful, ambitious projects that will make a real difference in the places they live. While we can’t fund every application, this level of interest shows the extraordinary momentum building behind community-led environmental action.”
Community groups, rūnanga and landowners working together
The breadth and quality of applications also underscore the importance of continued collaboration between communities, mana whenua, landowners and agencies to deliver shared outcomes for Canterbury’s environment.
Each successful project represents more than funding - it is an investment in local leadership, collective action and a healthier future for Waitaha.
While not every application could be supported, they all reflect a region-wide commitment to caring for land, water and biodiversity, and to building resilience for generations to come.
As these projects get underway, communities across Canterbury will see practical environmental improvements — from restored habitats and healthier waterways to stronger local partnerships and increased resilience.
