Tracing the source of a Hagley Park oil discharge and preventing future spills
Something’s not quite right in an urban waterway running through Hagley Park. In Addington Brook, Christchurch, a small oil discharge has been found, and we're asking the local community to check their properties for leaks and report spills that you see.
Last month, our incident response team discovered a small oily discharge in Addington Brook, visible from the southwest corner of Hagley Park. Testing confirmed the substance was Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons – the same stuff found in engine oil. Right now, a boom and oil-absorbing pads are in place to contain discharge and protect the environment.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this kind of pollution in Addington Brook. While no wildlife was harmed this time, oily discharges can seriously impact ducks, fish, and other aquatic life.
Just last week, a little blue penguin was seen swimming in the Avon River, which is linked to the Brook. This is why finding the source and stopping future spills is critical.
What we know so far
- Our team has been on the ground, inspecting sites and installing containment measures.
- A boom and oil-absorbing pads are in place, and warning signs advise people and pets to avoid the area while cleanup efforts continue.
- A faint oily sheen is still visible in some spots.
- The leak could be coming from a private property, hidden from view and flowing through stormwater drains straight into the brook.
- Stormwater isn’t treated and anything that goes down those drains ends up in our waterways.
How you can help identify the oil source
Because the source of the oil may be coming from a nearby private property, residents in the area play a crucial role in helping us find and stop the leak.
Check your property
If you live near Hagley Park South – around areas including Rex Street, Blenheim Road, Lincoln Road, Deans Avenue and Moorhouse Avenue – please check your garages and sheds for:

Why it matters
Urban waterways are complex – underground pipes, mixed land uses, and hidden sources make tracking pollution tough. Every tip helps us protect the health of Addington Brook and the wildlife that call it home.
Reminder: Dumping chemicals into waterways is illegal and can lead to fines or prosecution.
