Reduce nitrogen loss — Join our catch crops field day in Omarama
Farmers, don’t let your winter nitrogen go to waste — grow more feed between main crops and pasture renewal. Join us for a field day in Omarama to learn about catch crops from scientists studying their potential in the high-country.
Event details
- Date: Wednesday 26 November at 11am
- Location: Omarama-Otematata Road, Omarama
- What you'll learn: Join Dr Brendon Malcom from Bioeconomy Science Institute and his team at one of the farms near Omarama where they are studying catch crops this winter and next.
Why catch crops matter
- Catch crops are sown between main crops or during pasture renewal.
- Mid-Canterbury and Otago farm trials show they can reduce soil nitrogen by up to 60 per cent and cut sediment runoff by around 40 per cent.
We’re supporting a two-year trial in the Upper Waitaki to see if they could have as positive results on farms in the colder high country.
