We manage environmental regulation, protect communities from natural hazards, and maintain flood protection, land drainage, and erosion control infrastructure across Waitaha/Canterbury.
Our responsibilities include weed control, river mouth/lake openings, and gravel extraction for flood and erosion protection and timely updates on flood warning. Enhancing braided rivers through planting and wetland enhancement supports biodiversity.
Gravel extraction is another tool we use to provide flood and erosion protection, and we provide direction on effective gravel management and issue permissions to extract gravel.
We also maintain and enhance the natural character of our braided rivers to help create healthy river berms and habitat for various braided river species.
