Matters to be aware of when considering your volume and duration

Gravel management strategy

The Canterbury Regional River Gravel Management Strategy guides the management of the river gravel resource in Waitaha/Canterbury and outlines the overarching rules for gravel extraction, including rules on volume and duration.

  • Gravel authorisations will be issued for a maximum duration of 12 months and a maximum volume of 30,000 cubic metres in South Canterbury, or 60,000 cubic metres in the rest of Waitaha.
  • Resource consents will be issued for a maximum duration of 12 months and a maximum volume of 60,000 cubic metres across the entire region, except on the Waimakariri River, where durations of up to 5 years and volumes of up to the maximum available quantity will be considered.

Gravel authorisations

The Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP) has provisions that allow our rivers team to issue gravel authorisations when the criteria of the GMS and the LWRP are met. Gravel authorisations are more cost-effective and may be issued faster than a resource consent.

Gravel charges

To support the management of gravel in Canterbury, holders of gravel resource consents or authorisations are charged a fee. This fee is charged at $0.23 per cubic metre of the total volume allocated on your resource consent or gravel authorisation. It does not depend on the volume extracted.
