Christchurch City Council - Akaroa Wastewater Treatment Scheme

Christchurch City Council (CCC) has applied for various resource consents to establish and operate a wastewater treatment scheme and associated discharges to land as part of the Akaroa Treated Wastewater Irrigation Scheme.

Current status: The hearing has been deferred until the applicant lodges further discharge consent applications. The Hearing Commissioners have directed the applicant to provide monthly reports on the applications’ progress. Proposal summary

CCC has applied to Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) and CCC for various resource consents to establish and operate a wastewater treatment scheme and associated discharges to land as part of the Akaroa Treated Wastewater Irrigation Scheme at:

  • 80 Old Coach Road, Akaroa
  • 11 Sawmill Road, Duvauchelle, 6583 Christchurch Akaroa Road, Akaroa, and
  • Jubilee Park, Akaroa.

Application to Christchurch City Council

  • RMA/2023/1347: To use land to construct and operate systems (commencing with pipes from the Terminal Pump Station) and structures for conveying, treating, and storing wastewater, to undertake earthworks within sites of Ngāi Tahu cultural significance (wāhi tapu and silent file areas) and to undertake earthworks required to construct the Akaroa Treated Wastewater Irrigation Scheme and associated structures.

Applications to Canterbury Regional Council

  • CRC235038: To use land for community wastewater treatment and storage
  • CRC235039: To use land for earthworks and vegetation clearance within a high soil erosion risk area and over an unconfined/semi-confined aquifer
  • CRC235040: To discharge treated wastewater to land and to discharge contaminants (odour) to air
  • CRC235041: To discharge construction-phase stormwater to land.
