Council re-establishes Artificial Intelligence Working Group
Environment Canterbury has approved the re‑establishment of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Working Group to examine how AI is being used to analyse data, support decision‑making and serve local communities.
Artificial intelligence is no longer a future concept - it’s already supporting how we analyse data, make decisions and serve our communities.
Recognising the pace and scale of technology and following strong debate at Wednesday’s Regional Delivery Committee meeting, Canterbury Regional Councillors have approved the re-establishment of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Working Group.
The group’s purpose is for an informal working group of councillors to explore and discuss AI application. The group will analyse trends and developments, foster knowledge sharing, promote digital democracy and develop informed perspectives.
Why the AI Working Group is being re-established
The Artificial Intelligence Working Group will be chaired by Councillor Joe Davies and will meet up to four times a year. Workshops will generally be open to the public. It will also give opportunity to local developers and AI start-ups to share their work with the group.
Councillor Davies said the decision reflects a proactive approach to governance in a rapidly changing environment.
A focus on informed, people-centred governance
“AI is already part of everyday public sector work, and by leaning into these conversations now, we’re making sure we understand what’s happening, what’s coming, and what good governance looks like in this space,” Councillor Davies said.
The Working Group builds on similar work undertaken during the previous triennium, which included discussions with external experts on AI use, regulation and risk.
“This isn’t about chasing trends,” Councillor Davies said. “It’s about being curious, informed, and thoughtful - and making sure people remain at the centre of how technology is used in government.”
How insights will inform council decision-making
Insights from the Working Group will be reported back to the Regional Delivery Committee to inform future Council discussions.
“Being future focused is part of our responsibility to Canterbury. This Working Group helps ensure we’re not just reacting to change but engaging with it openly and responsibly.” Councillor Davies said.
