McLeans Forest open day celebrates 20 years of recreation, adventure and community
Two decades ago, McLeans Forest became the first recreation area to open within Environment Canterbury's regional park network, creating a place for Cantabrians to explore, connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors for generations to come.
Now, 20 years later, the community is invited to celebrate the milestone at McLeans Forest, just outside Christchurch, and see how much the park has grown. From family bike rides and horse trekking to picnics and outdoor events, generations of Cantabrians have made memories at McLeans Forest.
McLeans Forest open day activities
On Saturday 3 October, Environment Canterbury is hosting a free open day at McLeans Forest from 10am to 2pm, with activities for all ages. There will be something for everyone, including Crazy Bikes, an Agents of Discovery challenge, a historic display showcasing the park's evolution over time, and a free barbecue.
"Reaching 20 years is a really special milestone. McLeans Forest has become a place where generations of Cantabrians have spent time together, tried something new and enjoyed being outdoors," says Karen Elliott, Team Leader Parks and Forests.
"It's great to look back at how far the park has come since becoming the first recreation area in our regional park network and celebrate the connection the community has built with it."
How McLeans Forest has evolved over the last 20 years
While many visitors have fond memories of time spent at McLeans Forest, the park has continued to evolve over the past 20 years.
Recent additions such as the food forest and miniature road system have created even more opportunities for people of all ages to get outdoors, learn and explore, alongside the park's extensive network of tracks and trails.
"If you haven't visited for a while, you might be surprised by what's here now," Karen Elliott says.
"The park has grown alongside the community. Whether you're coming back to an old favourite or discovering it for the first time, there's always something new to experience."
The many roles of McLeans Forest regional park
While many people know McLeans Forest as a place to walk, ride and explore, the wider regional park serves a number of important purposes for Canterbury.
Alongside recreation, it supports commercial forestry and leased land, while also playing a critical role in helping manage flood risk for Christchurch and North Canterbury.
The park is carefully managed to balance flood protection, environmental outcomes and recreation, ensuring it continues to deliver benefits for communities across the region.
