Official information request (LGOIMA)

You can request information from us at any time. We follow the processes and timeframes set out in the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA)1987.

As a council, we support being open and transparent and will provide information unless there is a justified reason not to.

Much of our information is already available online including property information and resource consents. You may also like to search our document library to find reports, plans, or other documents. Contact our Advisory Team on 0800 324 636 if you need help finding information.

Guidance for making information requests
Be specific when you make your request. It helps us if you can specify details such as type of information, locations, factors, and timeframes.

Things you should know

Witholding information

We may withhold information if there is a good reason to do so, including:

  • protecting people’s privacy
  • maintaining legal privilege
  • protecting public health and safety
  • enabling the council’s commercial activities
  • ongoing legal investigation (information may be released once proceedings are completed).

Costs

There is usually no charge for supplying information.

Costs may be incurred if a response requires a substantial collation, amount, and research. There may also be charges for photocopying and materials.  We will advise you of this beforehand.

Processing times

While we work to ensure we can get your information as soon as possible, the LGOIMA Act allows us 20 working days.  If your request requires substantial collation, we may require an extension, and we’ll advise you within 20 working days if this is the case.  Please ensure your questions are as specific as possible to ensure we can get your information as quickly as we can.

If you're not satisfied
